Southern California is not where most people look for vineyards. Riverside County sits inland from a coastline that bakes, at a latitude where the growing season ought to be too hot for anything with acidity left in it. An honest Temecula Valley wine region guide has to open with the exception that makes the place work: a break in the hills west of town that lets the ocean in.

The federal government recognized the appellation on 23 November 1984 and renamed it Temecula Valley in June 2004, the only American viticultural area ever to change its name after approval. It covers roughly 33,000 acres in the southwest corner of the county. Most vineyards sit between about 1,200 and 1,600 feet, high enough that cold night air drains off them into the lower ground.

The second thing an honest account has to include is the decade the valley nearly lost. Pierce’s disease arrived in force in the late 1990s and took a large share of the vines with it. What went back into the ground afterward is not what came out.

A gap in the hills

The Santa Ana Mountains stand between the valley and a Pacific a little over twenty miles away. Two low points break that wall — the Rainbow Gap to the southwest and the Santa Margarita Gap below it — and marine air is pulled through both as the inland basins heat up and rise. Without them this would be desert edge, citrus country and not much else.

The result is a hot day followed by a genuinely cool night, with the daily swing often running thirty degrees or more. Mist tends to sit around the 1,400-foot line in the mornings before the sun clears it. That pattern buys hang time in a place whose afternoon temperatures suggest it should have none.

Soils are largely decomposed granite and sandy loam over granitic bedrock, which drains fast and holds very little water. Rainfall is low and almost entirely a winter event, so essentially every vineyard is irrigated. Air moving through the gaps also keeps humidity down, holding mildew pressure below what the coastal valleys live with.

What Pierce’s disease did here

Pierce’s disease is caused by Xylella fastidiosa, a bacterium that lives in the xylem, the water-conducting tissue of its host plant. As the bacterial population grows it blocks those vessels, and the vine dies of water stress even where soil moisture is adequate. The symptoms are distinctive: leaf margins scorched in concentric zones, clusters shrivelled on the cane, and dried leaves that fall away leaving the stem attached, a pattern growers call matchsticks.

The bacterium cannot move on its own. It travels inside xylem-feeding insects, and in California’s coastal valleys the usual carrier is the blue-green sharpshooter, which breeds in streamside vegetation and seldom ranges far from it. Vineyards a few hundred feet back from a creek have historically escaped real damage.

Temecula’s problem was a different insect. The glassy-winged sharpshooter, native to the southern United States and northern Mexico, was first detected in California in 1989 and, as the University of California’s pest management guidance on Pierce’s disease in grapes records, became established in Southern California in the early 1990s. Set against the native carriers it flies greater distances and feeds on a far wider range of plants. Disease first documented in valley vineyards in 1997 was across the appellation within roughly two years.

The groves next door

The speed of it comes down to agricultural geography. Temecula grows citrus alongside grapes, and citrus is an excellent year-round host for the glassy-winged sharpshooter, which overwinters in the groves and moves into vines in spring. University of California researchers mapping the epidemic found that 38 percent of the valley’s vineyard acreage lay within 1,000 feet of a citrus grove, and 72 percent within 2,000 feet.

That figure is the one visitor guides never print, and it explains the shape of the outbreak better than any date can. A vector that only had to cross a farm road faced no meaningful barrier anywhere in the valley. Control came from removing infected vines, treating the neighbouring groves and area-wide monitoring, not from anything done inside a vineyard alone.

Plantings before the epidemic leaned on Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot, the varieties a 1980s California market asked for. Replanting handed growers a rare chance to reconsider an entire appellation at once, and much of what went back in was chosen for heat rather than for fashion.

Warm-country reds carry the region now — Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Tempranillo, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon among them. On the white side Viognier, Roussanne, Vermentino and Grenache Blanc hold up through a Temecula September in a way Chardonnay rarely did. The older varieties did not vanish; they stopped being the default.

Rootstock selection changed too, and vector monitoring is now a permanent budget line rather than an emergency measure. None of that makes the valley immune, but it does make the current planting a considered answer to a specific problem instead of an inheritance.

Set beside those two, Temecula is small, warm and relieved through a narrow opening rather than a wide one. The mechanism is the state’s standard one at a different scale, worked out in the Paso Robles appellation and its districts and on Lodi’s Delta-cooled valley floor. Further north, Dry Creek Valley’s benchland Zinfandel shows the same idea working through soil instead of wind.

Ask when the block was planted. Anything in the ground since roughly 2002 is post-epidemic material, selected with the valley’s heat in mind, and the difference usually shows in the glass.

For reds, expect ripe fruit, moderate acidity and soft tannin, which suits grilled meat and anything cooked over charcoal. The Rhône and Iberian varieties take char particularly well, and Sangiovese grown here is rounder than its Italian namesake, so it sits alongside tomato-based dishes without fighting them.

For whites and rosé, Viognier, Vermentino and dry pink wine from Grenache or Mourvèdre are the styles built for a hot afternoon. Is Pierce’s disease still a problem in the valley?

The disease has not been eradicated and the glassy-winged sharpshooter remains present in Southern California. What changed is management: area-wide monitoring, treatment of neighbouring host crops and prompt removal of infected vines hold incidence far below late-1990s levels.

How far is the valley from the ocean?

A little over twenty miles in a straight line, with the Santa Ana Mountains standing in between. The cooling that reaches the vines arrives through two low gaps in that range rather than over the top of it.
